londonprintstudio Newsletter November 2011 |
Researching the Grafik Apparel exhibition (opening Thursday 15th December) has meant looking at some really exciting projects, for example the work of Rhian Soloman who is bringing together plastic surgeons and pattern cutters from the fashion industry to look at how these two very different professions might learn from and inform each other's practice.
In the afternoon of 27th September I gave a presentation to the Impact 7 Conference at Monash University in Melbourne, before turning up at lps in the morning (oh the wonders of Skype and time travel!). If anyone would like to read the paper, which explores the impact of the web on activist graphics it can be downloaded here.
We're always trying to update and we're now trying to make sure that we're running our courses at the most convenient times for studio users. We'd like to ask you to help us. Later on in this newsletter, you'll find a link to a survey. It would really help us if you could take a few moments to let us know about the best times for courses. Individuals participating in the survey will be entered into a prize draw for a £20 gift token.
I am also developing a new service to provide high quality photographs of artworks for reproduction. Artists will either be able to bring work to lps, or we will be able to visit your studio. To launch the service, we will be offering a special discount to registered studio users. Please contact me if you would like more details.
Alongside our regular courses, we are planning a series of Masterclasses by leading printmakers who have outstanding expertise in particular techniques. Details of the programme will follow soon.
We are still working on our new website with Think Publishing. It looks as though we will be going live in January 2012, and from the beginning of the new year we will be running an online booking system, shop and gallery. |

Finally, Queen’s Park Neighbourhood Forum, like many community groups across the country has had its funding cut dramatically. Undaunted, they asked if I could come up with a image expressing their determination to continue working together to improve the neighbourhood. Playing with the letters of Queens Park, I realised that by dropping the Q and U, and turning an e on its side, you could make the phrase New Spark. We made lanterns of the letters and on bonfire night took the photos to create this poster (click on image to see it full size) |

Magnify / Multiply MA Printmaking New Buckinghamshire University Opening Party: 1st December 2011 - 6pm to 8pm Exhibition runs: 1st December - 10th December 2011 |
|
|
Driven by an inquisitiveness to reveal what is unseen, this year's graduating MA Printmaking students from Buckinghamshire New University, use their curiosity to highlight the overlooked and push the small into the immense. Magnify Multiply will be showcased in two locations, reflecting the two pathways available within the course framework. The exhibition at londonprintstudio will mainly focus on the work of Pradeep Mahadeshwar. During his stay in London, Mahadeshwar has developed a fascination with the waterways beneath the streets. Recording and analysing the history of street utility covers, Mahadeshwar connects notions of pollution, political ambition, industrialisation, and design. The resulting work draws on his own Indian cultural references to express his findings through various art mediums, including photography, etching, video and installation. |

Burrill works across a range of media, including posters, moving image and three-dimensional work. He combines an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words. Printmaking is an important part of Burrill’s practice and he creates limited edition prints with slogans including “Work Hard and Be Nice to People” that have become mantras for the design community and beyond. Two highly skilled new Interns have started work in the print studio area: Ralph Overill and Marco Lawrence.
|
|
|
Ralph was recently awarded the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize 2011 for his series of etchings.
"This is the 16th year of Clifford Chance’s Postgraduate Printmaking survey exhibition and each year brings fresh discoveries, innovation and insight. Since our first show in 1996, the means of printmaking have changed beyond recognition: the growth and consolidation of digital technologies; the adoption of new media; film; installation, 3-d printing. All add to the armoury of traditional printmaking techniques, etching, lithography, screenprint, that are available in today’s art schools."
Ralph's piece has been added to their permanent collection and the exhibition runs until December 16th and is open by appointment, contact Nigel Frank 020 7006 538. For more of Ralph's work click here. |

Nothing for young artists in new Youth Contract
|
londonprintstudio has been providing valuable training and experience for young artists and arts workers for some years. The career development and re-employment rate of people who have worked with us has been impressive. Talented young artists manage to work out survival strategies, network and develop skills at presenting their work. Only a few weeks ago recent LPS comics intern Isabel Greenberg won the Observer/ Jonathan Cape graphic short story prize.
With youth unemployment hitting 1.02 million, the Government has now finally decided to do something. The Youth Contract, with 400,000 people to be trained at a cost of £1 billion was announced in late November. The aim of the scheme is to match people with private sector employers who might provide a long term contract - after a period of subsidised short term employment. There is nothing about placements in other sectors - like non profits.
This is disappointing – for so many talented young artists, the need is to develop effective self employment. It's difficult to see how the scheme will assist young fine art graduates.
After the Tory party 'cash for internships' scandal earlier this year, in which elite internships were auctioned off for profit, it would have been helpful to see whether there are other effective models, as successive non elite private sector schemes have failed. |
