Giving Today's Street Children a Better Tomorrow

October 2011                       e-news  issue 8

Dear Supporter

I was very moved yesterday when one of our youngsters who has recently started a job came to me and said  "In my tradition I am supposed to hand my first salary to my parents.  Here you are uncle"  and she thrust some Rupees into my hand.  I shall pass it on to the next generaton of children.  I know it will bring with it luck as well!

Three of our girls are going south to represent our state, West Bengal, in under 13 hockey.  And guess what?  Their house parent Indu-di  is the Team Manager!

A number of the children entered a writing competition a few months ago: their task was to write about their lives.

The stories (below) speak for themselves.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our Supporter Evening on October 12th in London.  It is not too late to sign up - just reply to this email and we will put your name on the list.

Warm regards

Tim

  In their Own Words.....

"I was born in 1994 in a very poor home. From my birth I never really knew what a carefree day meant. I ate rice and lentils for one meal and had just water for the next.....My father worked in a furniture store, but his work did not last all year round. For 6 months he had no work. The money that my father earned in those 6 months, my mother eked out over the whole year...."   Read more...

"I was a very naughty boy and ran away from home to Howrah Station because my father used to chain me to the door.  I stayed on Howrah Station for a long time.  One night Tony Uncle brought me to Future Hope.  When I first come here I was very sad, now I am happy.  Tony Baba took me home to see my family. I saw my father and he took me to a shop and gave me a coke and some chips.  Since then I go home to meet my parents and come back to Future Hope….  My father is an alcoholic.  He used to beat us up after he drank.  [At Future Hope] I will study hard and never run away.  I will help others and lead a good life.  Now I play cricket and football.  I enjoy playing cricket on holidays when we go to Rajarhat. We play cricket the whole day.   [His ambition is to become a professional cricketer and play for West Bengal and India] I will have to work very hard to make my dreams come true."

"I suddenly woke up from sleep and saw my father beating my mother.  That night my mother and I decided to run from there [he is soon separated from his mother and ends up miles from home on Howrah station.  He makes friends with 2 other boys on the station] We get together and beg from the people. With that money we used to live and whatever food we like to eat we eat.  [One night it was raining] we made a tent to sleep but we were very lucky because we saw a jeep where Tim Uncle was with other boys who came to pick us up.  At that time we did not know the language they were speaking.  Other people explained in Bengali “Do you want to go to a hostel?” We thought they were bad people but after a while we thought they were good and kind.  We reached Future Hope at midnight. We took a shower and wore new clothes, and ate some snacks and went to sleep.  The next morning we started in school from KG class.  Now I am in class 7.  I want to say very thanks to Tim Uncle because he made my life in a good way."

About Future Hope
Future Hope was founded in 1987 to provide a home, an education, medical aid and opportunity to some of the children of Kolkata who found themselves living on the streets.

We started with just a handful of boys but there are now 7 homes (2 girls' homes and 5 for boys) accommodating over 160 children. Our older children are now in full time employment or in further education.

In addition is our own Future Hope School where most of our children plus around 145 day scholars (children from the local slums) enjoy the benefits of a good all round education.

Sport remains an important part of life at Future Hope, which is perhaps best known for its rugby, but also offers a range of other sports both both girls and boys.

Our Fundraisers
So many of you have made huge efforts to raise magnificent funds to help with the day to day costs of running Future Hope: you have held memorial concerts,  diverted birthday, wedding, golden wedding and even diamond wedding presents to us; you have climbed, walked, run, cycled, swum or simply got out your cheque book because you want to make a difference to the lives of children who would otherwise have no hope for a better future.
It is impossible to mention every event and every person who has helped us.  But we are truly grateful as you know.

This column is a chance for fundraisers who have a JustGiving page to share the link with the wider supporter network.
If you are fundraising for Future hope and have a Just Giving page, let us know and we will give you a link like those below...
