Welcome to the first edition of our new Dancers' Career Development e-newsletter! We are thrilled that we will now be able to regularly share information and updates with you.
DCD has now been in existence for over 35 years and since its founding we have helped thousands of dancers to make the often difficult transition from dancing to a post-performing career of their choice. Whilst our educational, psychological and financial retraining services have proved invaluable to dancers in transition, DCD is more than just the sum of the services it provides.
Dancers often tell us that the greatest benefit of DCD is simply to have the opportunity to talk to someone who truly understands the challenges of moving on from a committed dancing career they feel passionate about to another profession, be it inside or outside the dance industry.
We are delighted to receive an incredible amount of positive feedback from our retrained dancers and this newsletter will allow us for the first time to share the many success stories and valuable tips and updates, not only with dancers and the dance industry but a wider audience. The newsletter will help to promote new businesses, provide DCD News and calendar updates, give an insider’s view on selected career paths and much more.
We welcome your feedback and hope you enjoy the first issue of DCD News!

DCD Retrained dancer of the month Isabel Mortimer - Life Coach CPCC |
I was a professional dancer for over 22 years and I think it is safe to say dancing was my life. Dancing is not something you do, it’s something you are; so what do you do when you don’t want to dance anymore? It can leave a big gap. My retraining would not have been possible without the emotional and financial backing of Dancers' Career Development. When I walked into my meeting with Linda and Anja, I was taken aback by the level of understanding and respect they gave me and my career. I think for the first time after 22 years of dancing I could analyse my career, assess my skills and decide how to apply them to my future.
In addition to advice the DCD gave me a living allowance, money towards childcare (whilst I was in my training), they covered travel, course fees, equipment, stationery, books and publicity to set up my new business. With this support I was able to fully embrace the challenge of starting afresh. I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach CPCC and I run my own life coaching practice and work as a business consultant in organisational change and development.
After a few years of working in business and coaching one to one, I realised that something was missing. I wanted to go back into the Arts world, but to contribute in a different way than I had previously. I wanted to be part of shaping and directing new ideas in an arts organisation. I needed to learn some news skills and knowledge about how an organisation works. I applied for the Clore Leadership Programme. I feel enormously grateful to have been awarded a Dance Fellowship 2010 supported by DCD and The Linbury Trust. Nearly 5 years after my first meeting with the DCD I am coaching people from all walks of life and embarking on an exciting new journey with the Clore Leadership Programme. I am constantly amazed and grateful at how much can be achieved with focused support. None of this would have been possible had the DCD not existed. |

Isabel Mortimer has been a dancer for over 22 years with companies such as London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Rambert and Adventures In Motion Pictures/New Adventures. She applied to DCD to become a qualified Life Coach CPCC. She is now a Clore Fellow.
