Paul Mead DCD Trustee and Development Committee Member
I am one of two representatives of Equity, the performer's union, on the Board of Trustees of DCD, the other being Hilary Hadley, Head of Live Entertainment at Equity. I am on the Equity Council as the Choreographer’s Councilor and am Chair of the Choreographer's Committee. Our brief is to look after the interests of choreographers and also commercial dancers.
I think my background can bring a different perspective to the excellent work the DCD does in helping dancers retrain as I have worked mainly in the commercial and subsidised sector as a director, choreographer and actor. I was trained as a dancer at RAMBERT and as an actor at RADA.
I have appeared in the West End in "Annie", "Pyjama Tops", "Billy Bishop goes to War" and have done two seasons at the Open Air Theatre, Regents Park. I have done national tours of plays and musicals and repertory seasons at some of the leading theatres in the country including Nottingham, Northampton and Coventry. I have choreographed over 80 musicals, plays and pantomimes and have directed at some of the main performing arts schools: Arts Educational, East 15, Webber Douglas and was recently Head of Acting at the Midlands Academy of Dance & Drama.
I hope that during my time with DCD I can help dancers with their career changes.
Paul Mead

DCD's Development Committee is a non-executive committee drawn from distinguished individuals from the dance and theatre industry. The Committee meets five times a year to make recommendations on Independent Dancers' applications which are then presented for final approval to the Board of Trustees. The Committee also looks after fundraising, raising awareness for career transition and runs projects and events in aid of DCD. |

Along with 4 other Pilates teachers, two physiotherapists and about 7 different therapists who regularly rent one of the rooms, 26 classes are run each week.
Charlotte states:
"It has been a lovely journey and I am still learning and still loving teaching and helping people. Pilates is so fantastic if taught at the right level for each individual"

A welcome process of change
The idea of giving back to the sector was not optional. Although planning a strategy for achieving this was perhaps not as unproblematic.
Knowing my performance career was coming to an end was not difficult to embrace as I might have expected because my interest within dance was not bound to performance alone. Gaining my degree was the first thing I set out to achieve although this came much later than most as my career started very early when such options were limited. I was able to take a year out but without a regular salary this was a hugely daunting. The blow was cushioned by support from the DCD.
I returned to work knowing that change was imminent and although the pathway forward was still clouded I gained more direction when I progressed from being a dancer to a Lecturer of Dance at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Shortly after this I became Rehearsal and Tour Director for Phoenix Dance Theatre, where I am now Artistic Director.
I was afraid that I would have to return to the starting blocks in order to make major changes to the direction of my career. There was uncertainty that I would somehow become separated from the very thing that mapped out my success in dance and could be a distant memory. The Clore programme was absolutely the right course of development for me. Listening to like-minded individuals and having a range of voices to encourage and challenge my thinking was at times overwhelming, however over time I have appreciated the value of the diligent thinking that took place over that period.
Being awarded a Woman to Watch 2010 was an accolade to the work I am developing and I continue to explore ways to enhance and grow, both personally and professionally. This has been underpinned by the re-training. As a relatively new Artistic Director I have begun to reach out to a network of artists inside and outside the dance world who can be intimidated by the title of ‘Artistic Director’. Dancers often aspire towards the role of choreographer but the difficulties they discover in practice deters many of them. I have taken hold of the opportunities available to me to choreograph, but relied heavily on the processes of retraining to ensure that I develop the necessary skills to continue being relevant to the sector as an Artistic Director.
